SHIPPERKE
LITTLE
Shepherd dog
WITH BIG
HEART

The diversity of the world of dogs does not cease to amaze us with different, sometimes even amazing breeds. If you look into the cynological past of our country, the most recognizable were the German Shepherd, Dachshund, Airedale, Poodle, Great Dane, well, a few more breeds. In our time, we have a much larger selection of breeds, including very rare, sometimes represented by several dozen specimens. To such a rare and "new" dog breed
(and actually having more than 200 years of history) are our little heroes - Schipperke.

Who this Schipperke is?

Shipperke - small, energetic, agile, black with a unique coat of a dog. Originating in Belgium, the breed was used as a shepherd's dog, as well as watchmen and rat-catchers on barges and boats. About the little black "devils" they said - "a big dog in a small package", because they are very active, curious and absolutely fearless.
At first glance at a small little Shipperke, a person does not immediately understand their true uniqueness, but as soon as they manage to communicate with representatives of this breed, the “little shepherds” are shocking with their intellect, self-confidence and some genuine

pride. Also does not leave indifferent and appearance shipperke! Black, shiny, waxed-polished boots, with extraordinary wool, small eyes, embers and a quick, intelligent look, always pointed pointed ears, which do not miss a single sound, especially an outsider, adorning the collar around the thick wool that gives to the little “imp”, the majestic look ... And, of course, the character, who literally exclaims that, despite its size, the real Schipperke is the smallest, but Sheepdog!
The origin and development of the breed still causes many disputes. The first mention of shipperke belong to the year 1609. Some consider these dogs representatives of the Spitz family, others - the result of crossing a terrier with a dwarf spitz. It is likely that Schipperke has a common ancestor with the Gruenendahl (one of the varieties of the Belgian Shepherd), since it resembles a smaller representative of this breed. At that time, only big dogs could afford to keep big dogs, but small dogs were not a burden for ordinary citizens, and besides, they did an excellent job with their duties, thereby helping ordinary people in everyday life. So the Schipperke lineage, its direct morphology, similar to the characteristics of a shepherd dog and character, as well as its small size, have created a great popularity of the breed, extending far beyond the borders of Belgium.

SCHIPPERKE IN UKRAINE

Today shipperke is popular not only in their homeland. These dogs are bred in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Austria and in the countries of South Africa. Sipperke begin to gain its popularity in the countries of the former Soviet Union. In Ukraine, these dogs appeared only a year ago and aroused genuine interest. Several kennels brought this breed and have already started working with it. In the kennel "Vasiliev Ostrov" (Dnepropterovsk) lives a dog Schipperk (import Finland) and two females (import Czech Republic). In the nursery "Crimean Khan" (Sevastopol) lives another girl (import Czech Republic). All Czech dogs originate from the mono-breed kennel Prachovskýchskal, which is located in the city of Ichin, 100 km from Prague. The breeder Vlasta Brezinova has been engaged in Schipperke for more than 10 years. Her pets have been participating for five years in the Schipperke Championships in Belgium, where the most famous kennels are represented, and occupy leading positions. And Vlasta is seriously engaged in agility and participates with various dogs in various competitions.

Also in the Crimea there are several shipperki brought from Russia from the nursery "Krasnaya Gorka" (Moscow). It is very interesting to watch the development of this breed in Ukraine. And I think in the future we will see more and more of these little clockwork "devils" in the rings.

IF YOU WANT SCHIPPERKE ...

The desire to have something new and unique in their home is now attracting more and more interest from people. But before you decide that you need a Schipperke, you should think about it. “Little cowherd boys” is such a cute, at first glance, these dogs got a nickname for good reason. Even now in Belgium and England, representatives of this breed participate in competitions in the corral of geese and ducks. Therefore, it is very important to direct their inexhaustible energy in the right direction. Here is how the Standard of the breed characterizes the shipperke: “... An excellent little guard dog, extremely sensitive, keenly interested in everything around. Active and busy, agile and relentless (perpetuum mobile) interested in finding out everything around, capable of grabbing and carrying an object (if possible) or guard (if necessary), very gentle with children, always curious to know what happens behind a closed door or behind an object (target) that moves. He shows his reaction with a short bark, raised by the mane of an inquisitive dog, always ready to hunt rats and other parasites ... "
Dogs of this breed are somewhat wary of strangers. They will always warn if something suspicious happens, and if needed, they will resolutely defend the owner and their territory.
Schipperke - self-confident, independent dogs. Due to its “compactness”, they are perfect for people who would like to have a pet for protection, but cannot afford a large dog, as they live in a small apartment. Small shepherd dogs tend to get along well with other pets, including cats. However, differences may arise with dogs of the same sex. These are very clever, but somewhat wayward creatures.Schipperke is perfect for many people, but do not forget that these dogs have a great need for movement, and most importantly - for communication and training. With the "little shepherd" you can do almost all kinds of dog sports!

The most difficult moment of growing up and becoming is from 3-4 weeks to 15 weeks. This is a very important period for socialization, since it is at this time that the foundations of character are laid, and it is important that the owner is near and give enough attention to his pet. Shipperke is very affectionate and loyal to the owner and his family, they are incredibly quickly learnable and smart!Properly socialized and grown Shipperke - the perfect companion! He will be friends with all the people of the family, have fun playing with children, make happy with the success at competitions and dog shows, accompany the owner on trips. But the main task of the “little cowgirl” is always to stay on the check of well-being, safety, and also to be a guarantor of a good mood in the family, with which he will serve faithfully for his whole life!
